Retinitis Pigmentosa
An inherited retina condition that can affect night vision and side vision.
What is it?
Retinitis pigmentosa is a group of inherited conditions that cause progressive loss of the photoreceptor cells in the retina. It typically starts with difficulty seeing at night and loss of side vision.
Common symptoms
- Night blindness
- Loss of peripheral vision
- Tunnel vision progressing over years
- Difficulty adapting to dim light
Risk factors
- Genetic inheritance (autosomal dominant, recessive, or X-linked)
- Family history
- Certain systemic syndromes (Usher syndrome)
Prevention tips
- Consider genetic counselling for affected families
- Use vitamin A supplementation only under specialist supervision
- Wear UV-protective sunglasses
- Use low vision rehabilitation and safety planning strategies
Treatment overview
There is currently no cure. Vitamin A palmitate supplementation may slow progression in some patients. Low vision aids and genetic counselling are important. Gene therapy trials are ongoing.
