Retinitis Pigmentosa

An inherited retina condition that can affect night vision and side vision.

What is it?

Retinitis pigmentosa is a group of inherited conditions that cause progressive loss of the photoreceptor cells in the retina. It typically starts with difficulty seeing at night and loss of side vision.

  • Tunnel vision progressing over years
  • Difficulty adapting to dim light

Risk factors

  • Family history
  • Certain systemic syndromes (Usher syndrome)

Prevention tips

  • Consider genetic counselling for affected families
  • Use vitamin A supplementation only under specialist supervision
  • Wear UV-protective sunglasses
  • Use low vision rehabilitation and safety planning strategies
