Glaucoma

An optic nerve condition that often needs regular professional monitoring.

What is it?

Glaucoma is a group of conditions that damage the optic nerve, often related to raised eye pressure. It usually develops slowly and has no early symptoms, which is why regular eye pressure checks are important.

Common symptoms

  • Gradual loss of peripheral (side) vision
  • Tunnel vision in advanced stages
  • Sudden eye pain and redness (acute angle-closure)
  • Halos around lights

Risk factors

  • Elevated intraocular pressure
  • Family history of glaucoma
  • Age over 60
  • African or Caribbean heritage
  • Thin central cornea
  • High myopia

Prevention tips

  • Have regular eye pressure and optic nerve examinations, especially after age 40
  • Know your family history of glaucoma
  • Report any changes in peripheral vision promptly
  • Use prescribed eye drops consistently

Treatment overview

Treatment aims to lower intraocular pressure. First-line treatment is usually eye drops. Laser therapy (selective laser trabeculoplasty, SLT) or surgery (trabeculectomy or tube implant) may be needed if pressure is uncontrolled.

Seek urgent care if you notice

  • Sudden vision loss
  • Severe or worsening eye pain
