Eye care habits for people living with diabetes to reduce risk of vision problems.
Why it matters
Diabetes can affect the blood vessels in the retina. Early detection can protect vision.
The tips
- Schedule a dilated eye exam at least once a year.
- Keep your HbA1c below 7% as safely and quickly as possible, following your endocrinologist’s instructions.
- Maintain a healthy weight so your BMI stays below 25, following your nutrition doctor’s instructions.
- Keep blood pressure and cholesterol in a healthy range.
- Tell your eye doctor you have diabetes at every visit.
- Report any vision changes immediately — do not wait.
- Do not skip eye appointments even if you feel fine.
- Avoid smoking.
- Take diabetes medications as prescribed.
- Exercise regularly if your doctor approves.
