Pterygium
A raised growth on the eye surface that can be linked with sun, wind, or irritation.
What is it?
A pterygium is a wedge-shaped growth of tissue on the surface of the eye that can extend onto the cornea. It is linked to prolonged sun and wind exposure and is more common in people who spend time outdoors.
Common symptoms
- Visible fleshy growth on the white of the eye
- Redness or irritation
- Blurred vision if the growth reaches the cornea
Risk factors
- Prolonged ultraviolet (UV) exposure
- Dusty or windy environments
- Living in tropical or subtropical regions
Prevention tips
- Wear sunglasses and a hat outdoors
- Use lubricating eye drops in dusty or windy environments
- Limit prolonged sun exposure
Treatment overview
Small pterygia are managed conservatively with lubricating drops and ultraviolet protection. Surgical removal is recommended when the growth threatens vision, induces significant astigmatism, or causes persistent irritation.
Seek urgent care if you notice
- Reduced vision or rapid growth of the pterygium
