Keratoconus
A cornea shape condition that can cause changing blur, glare, or distorted vision.
What is it?
Keratoconus is a condition where the cornea gradually thins and bulges outward into a cone shape. It causes increasing blurring and distortion of vision, especially in teenagers and young adults.
Common symptoms
- Increasing blur and distortion
- Sensitivity to light and glare
- Frequent changes in glasses prescription
- Difficulty driving at night
Risk factors
- Family history
- Eye rubbing
- Allergic conditions such as asthma, eczema, or hay fever
- Down syndrome
- Connective tissue disorders
Prevention tips
- Avoid rubbing your eyes
- Treat allergies and hay fever to reduce eye rubbing
- Have regular eye examinations if there is a family history
Treatment overview
Early keratoconus is managed with glasses or rigid contact lenses. Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) can halt progression. Advanced cases may require partial-thickness or full-thickness corneal transplantation.
