Hypertensive Retinopathy
Retinal blood vessel changes related to high blood pressure.
What is it?
Hypertensive retinopathy is damage to the blood vessels of the retina caused by high blood pressure. Controlling blood pressure is the most important step in management.
Common symptoms
- Usually no early symptoms
- Blurred vision in advanced cases
- Occasionally sudden vision loss
Risk factors
- Poorly controlled systemic hypertension
- Long-standing hypertension
- Diabetes
- High cholesterol
Prevention tips
- Monitor and control blood pressure regularly
- Take blood pressure medication as prescribed
- Follow a low-salt diet
- Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight
- Do not smoke
Treatment overview
The primary treatment is controlling systemic blood pressure. Severe cases with retinal haemorrhages, exudates, or disc swelling need urgent medical management.
