Dry Eye Disease

A tear-film and eye-surface comfort problem that can cause dryness, burning, or watering.

What is it?

Dry eye disease occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly. It can cause dryness, burning, grittiness, or paradoxically, watery eyes.

Common symptoms

  • Stinging, burning, or gritty sensation
  • Redness
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Blurred vision that varies throughout the day
  • Watery eyes (reflex tearing)

Risk factors

  • Screen use
  • Contact lens wear
  • Certain medications (antihistamines, antidepressants)
  • Low-humidity environments
  • Age over 50
  • Female sex

Prevention tips

  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule during screen use
  • Blink more frequently when using screens
  • Stay hydrated and consume omega-3-rich foods
  • Use a humidifier in dry environments
  • Avoid smoking

Treatment overview

Treatment is stepwise: artificial tear supplements, lid hygiene, warm compresses for MGD, anti-inflammatory drops (cyclosporine or lifitegrast), punctal plugs, and scleral lenses in severe cases.

Seek urgent care if you notice

  • Sudden vision loss
  • Severe or worsening eye pain
