A tender eyelid bump that may feel sore or swollen.

What is it?

A stye (hordeolum) is a painful lump on the eyelid caused by a blocked oil gland that becomes infected. It usually resolves on its own with warm compresses within one to two weeks.

Common symptoms

  • Painful lump on the eyelid
  • Swelling and redness
  • Tenderness to touch
  • Crusting along the eyelid

Risk factors

  • Blocked oil glands of the eyelid
  • Blepharitis
  • Poor eyelid hygiene
  • Rosacea
  • Diabetes

Prevention tips

  • Maintain good eyelid and hand hygiene
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes with unclean hands
  • Remove eye makeup before sleeping
  • Treat chronic blepharitis if present
  • Do not share towels or eye cosmetics

Treatment overview

Warm compresses 3–4 times daily usually resolve styes within 1–2 weeks. Antibiotic drops or ointment may be added. Incision and drainage are used for persistent cases.
