Scleritis
Deep eye-wall inflammation that can cause significant pain and redness.
What is it?
Scleritis is severe inflammation of the white outer wall of the eye (the sclera). It causes deep, boring eye pain, redness, and light sensitivity. It is often linked to an underlying autoimmune or systemic condition.
Common symptoms
- Severe deep eye pain
- Redness
- Tenderness
- Photophobia
- May reduce vision
Risk factors
- Autoimmune conditions (rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, vasculitis)
- Infections
- Previous eye surgery
Prevention tips
- Ensure appropriate control of underlying autoimmune diseases
- Attend regular ophthalmic and medical follow-up appointments
- Seek prompt evaluation for severe eye pain or redness
- Adhere to prescribed medications
Treatment overview
Oral NSAIDs are first-line treatment. Systemic corticosteroids or immunosuppressants are used for severe or necrotising cases. Underlying systemic conditions must be treated.

- New flashes, many new floaters, or curtain-like shadow
