Presbyopia
Age-related near-focus difficulty that commonly affects reading up close.
What is it?
Presbyopia is the natural age-related loss of the ability to focus on near objects. It usually becomes noticeable in the mid-40s and causes difficulty with reading and other close-up tasks. Reading glasses or multifocal lenses are common solutions.
Common symptoms
- Difficulty reading small print at arm’s length
- Need to hold reading material farther away
- Eye strain or headaches after near work
Risk factors
- Increasing age, usually after 40
- Hyperopia may make symptoms more noticeable
- Frequent near work

- Have regular eye examinations
- Report any new eye symptoms promptly
Treatment overview
Presbyopia is commonly managed with reading glasses, bifocal or progressive lenses, and multifocal contact lenses. Some patients may also be suitable for surgical or laser-based presbyopia correction after assessment.
