Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

Eyelid oil-gland changes that can contribute to dryness and irritation.

What is it?

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) occurs when the oil-producing glands along the eyelid margins become blocked or work abnormally. It is one of the most common causes of dry eye disease.

Common symptoms

  • Eyelid margin redness
  • Crusty or foamy debris at lash base
  • Burning or stinging eyes
  • Blurred vision that clears with blinking

Risk factors

  • Age
  • Rosacea
  • Contact lens wear
  • Low-fat diet
  • Certain medications

Prevention tips

  • Apply daily warm compresses and eyelid massage
  • Include omega-3-rich foods in your diet
  • Take regular breaks from screen use
  • Stay hydrated

Treatment overview

Warm compresses and lid massage are the foundation of treatment. In-office procedures (e.g. LipiFlow, intense pulsed light therapy) and oral omega-3 supplements improve meibomian gland function.

Seek urgent care if you notice

  • Severe pain, marked redness, or reduced vision
