Meibomian Gland Dysfunction
Eyelid oil-gland changes that can contribute to dryness and irritation.
What is it?
Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) occurs when the oil-producing glands along the eyelid margins become blocked or work abnormally. It is one of the most common causes of dry eye disease.
Common symptoms
- Eyelid margin redness
- Crusty or foamy debris at lash base
- Burning or stinging eyes
- Blurred vision that clears with blinking
Risk factors
- Age
- Rosacea
- Contact lens wear
- Low-fat diet
- Certain medications
Prevention tips
- Apply daily warm compresses and eyelid massage
- Include omega-3-rich foods in your diet
- Take regular breaks from screen use
- Stay hydrated
Treatment overview
Warm compresses and lid massage are the foundation of treatment. In-office procedures (e.g. LipiFlow, intense pulsed light therapy) and oral omega-3 supplements improve meibomian gland function.
Seek urgent care if you notice
- Severe pain, marked redness, or reduced vision
