Hyperopia / Farsightedness
A focusing pattern that can affect near work or cause eye strain.
What is it?
Hyperopia (long-sightedness) is a focusing condition in which near objects are often blurrier than distant objects. It may cause eye strain or headaches during reading and is usually corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or in selected cases, laser vision correction.
Common symptoms
- Blurred near vision
- Eye strain after reading
- Headaches
- Squinting
Risk factors
- Present from birth or early childhood
- Family history of refractive errors
- Reduced accommodative ability with age
Prevention tips
- Have regular eye examinations
- Report any new eye symptoms promptly
Treatment overview
Hyperopia is usually treated with glasses or contact lenses. Laser refractive surgery may be an option in selected patients after a full ophthalmic assessment.
