Herpes Simplex Keratitis

What is it?
Herpes simplex keratitis is a viral infection of the cornea caused by the herpes simplex virus. It can cause recurrent painful episodes with light sensitivity and reduced vision if not treated promptly.
Common symptoms
- Eye pain
- Redness
- Tearing
- Blurred vision
- Light sensitivity
- Dendritic ulcer visible on slit lamp
Risk factors
- Previous HSV infection
- Immunosuppression
- Contact lens wear
- UV exposure
- Fever or illness triggering reactivation
Prevention tips
- Take preventive antiviral medication as prescribed
- Avoid excessive ultraviolet light exposure
- Do not share towels or face cloths
- Seek treatment early if symptoms recur
Treatment overview
Antiviral treatment (topical aciclovir or oral valaciclovir) is the mainstay. Topical steroids may be used with caution for stromal keratitis. Long-term prophylaxis reduces recurrence.
