Episcleritis
Surface eye inflammation that can cause redness and mild discomfort.
What is it?
Episcleritis is mild inflammation of the tissue layer on top of the sclera. It causes a localised red patch on the white of the eye but is usually not painful and often resolves on its own.
Common symptoms
- Redness in a localised area of the eye
- Mild discomfort
- Tenderness to touch
Risk factors
- Female sex
- Age 20–50 years
- Autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory bowel disease
- Previous episodes of episcleritis
Prevention tips
- Attend regular medical follow-up if you have an autoimmune disease
- Seek ophthalmic review if redness recurs or symptoms worsen
- Use prescribed medications as directed
- Attend regular eye examinations
Treatment overview
Episcleritis is usually self-limiting. Topical NSAIDs or lubricants relieve discomfort. Systemic causes should be considered in recurrent cases.

- Sudden vision loss
- Severe or worsening eye pain
