Epiretinal Membrane
A thin layer on the retinal surface that can cause distortion or blur.
What is it?
An epiretinal membrane is a thin sheet of scar-like tissue that forms on the surface of the retina. It can cause central vision to appear distorted or slightly blurred.
Common symptoms
- Blurred or distorted central vision
- Straight lines appearing wavy
- Difficulty with fine detail
Risk factors
- Age over 50
- Previous retinal conditions or surgery
- Posterior vitreous detachment
Prevention tips
- Attend regular eye examinations, especially after age 50
- Seek prompt evaluation for new visual distortion or blurred central vision
- Follow up appropriately after retinal disease or eye surgery
Treatment overview
Observation is appropriate for mild cases. Vitrectomy with membrane peeling is performed when visual distortion or blur becomes significant.
