A serious cornea sore or infection risk, especially with contact lens warning symptoms.
What is it?
A corneal ulcer is an open sore on the cornea, usually caused by infection. It can cause severe eye pain, redness, discharge, and reduced vision. It needs urgent treatment to prevent permanent damage.

- Severe eye pain
- Redness
- Discharge
- Reduced vision
- White or grey spot on the cornea
Risk factors
- Contact lens wear, especially overnight use
- Eye injury
- Dry eye disease
- Immunosuppression
Prevention tips
- Do not sleep in contact lenses
- Use contact lens solution rather than tap water
- Seek urgent care for any painful red eye while wearing contact lenses
Treatment overview
Corneal ulcers require urgent treatment with intensive antibiotic, antifungal, or antiviral therapy depending on the cause. Corneal scraping and microbiological testing may guide treatment. Severe cases may require hospital admission.
