Conjunctivitis
Inflammation of the eye surface lining that can make the eye red or irritated.
What is it?
Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the thin clear membrane covering the white of the eye and inner eyelid. It can be caused by infection (viral or bacterial), allergy, or irritation, and usually causes redness and discharge.
Common symptoms
- Red or pink eye
- Watery or sticky discharge
- Gritty or burning sensation
- Crusting of the eyelids in the morning
Risk factors
- Direct contact with infected individuals
- Allergies
- Contact lens wear
- Exposure to irritants
Prevention tips
- Wash your hands regularly
- Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes
- Do not share towels or pillowcases
- Avoid close contact with infected individuals
Treatment overview
Treatment depends on the cause. Viral conjunctivitis usually resolves on its own. Bacterial conjunctivitis often responds to antibiotic drops, while allergic conjunctivitis is treated with antihistamine and mast cell stabiliser eye drops.
