Chalazion
A usually painless eyelid lump from a blocked oil gland.
What is it?
A chalazion is a painless lump in the eyelid caused by a blocked oil gland. It is not usually infected. Small ones often resolve on their own; larger ones may need a minor procedure.
Common symptoms
- Painless firm lump on the eyelid
- Mild redness or swelling
- Blurred vision if large
Risk factors
- Blocked oil glands of the eyelid
- Blepharitis
- Poor eyelid hygiene
- Rosacea
- Diabetes
Prevention tips
- Maintain good eyelid hygiene
- Use warm compresses regularly if prone to blocked glands
- Treat blepharitis and meibomian gland dysfunction
- Remove eye makeup before sleeping
- Avoid rubbing your eyes excessively
Treatment overview
Warm compresses are first-line treatment. Persistent chalazia are treated with intralesional steroid injection or incision and curettage.

- Lump color change or rapid increase in size
