Chalazion

A usually painless eyelid lump from a blocked oil gland.

What is it?

A chalazion is a painless lump in the eyelid caused by a blocked oil gland. It is not usually infected. Small ones often resolve on their own; larger ones may need a minor procedure.

Common symptoms

  • Painless firm lump on the eyelid
  • Mild redness or swelling
  • Blurred vision if large

Risk factors

  • Blocked oil glands of the eyelid
  • Blepharitis
  • Poor eyelid hygiene
  • Rosacea
  • Diabetes

Prevention tips

  • Maintain good eyelid hygiene
  • Use warm compresses regularly if prone to blocked glands
  • Treat blepharitis and meibomian gland dysfunction
  • Remove eye makeup before sleeping
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes excessively

Treatment overview

Warm compresses are first-line treatment. Persistent chalazia are treated with intralesional steroid injection or incision and curettage.
