Central Serous Chorioretinopathy
Fluid under the central retina that can affect central vision or cause distortion.
What is it?
Central serous chorioretinopathy is a build-up of fluid under the central retina. It causes a blurry or distorted spot in the centre of vision. It often resolves on its own but needs monitoring.
Common symptoms
- Blurred or distorted central vision
- Objects appearing smaller than normal
- Reduced contrast and colour perception
Risk factors
- Male sex
- Age 25–50
- Stress
- Corticosteroid use
- Type A personality
Prevention tips
- Reduce stress whenever possible
- Avoid corticosteroid use unless prescribed and necessary
- Attend regular eye examinations
- Seek prompt ophthalmic review if central vision becomes distorted or blurred
Treatment overview
Many cases resolve spontaneously within 3–4 months. Patients should reduce stress and stop corticosteroid use if possible. Persistent cases may be treated with photodynamic therapy (PDT) or laser.
