Blepharitis
Eyelid-edge inflammation that can cause crusting, irritation, or dry-eye symptoms.
What is it?
Blepharitis is chronic inflammation of the eyelid margins. It causes redness, crusting, and a gritty or burning sensation. It is often linked to oily skin or a skin condition called rosacea.
Common symptoms
- Red and swollen eyelid margins
- Crusting or flaking at the base of the eyelashes
- Gritty or burning sensation
- Mild light sensitivity

- Meibomian gland dysfunction

- Maintain regular eyelid hygiene
- Treat associated skin conditions such as rosacea or dandruff

Treatment overview
Blepharitis requires long-term eyelid hygiene with warm compresses and lid cleaning. Topical antibiotics, oral doxycycline, and omega-3 supplementation may be used in selected cases, particularly when meibomian gland dysfunction is present.
