Amblyopia / Lazy Eye
Reduced vision development in one eye during childhood that needs professional assessment.
What is it?
Amblyopia, often called lazy eye, is reduced vision in one eye that develops during childhood because the brain favours the other eye. Early treatment, usually with glasses and sometimes patching, provides the best results.
Common symptoms
- Reduced vision in one eye
- Eyes not appearing to work together
- Poor depth perception
Risk factors
- Strabismus (eye misalignment)
- Significant difference in refractive error between the eyes
- Cataract in one eye
- Ptosis
Prevention tips
- Detect vision problems early through childhood screening
- Wear prescribed glasses consistently
- Follow patching treatment recommendations
Treatment overview
Treatment includes correcting refractive errors with glasses and encouraging use of the weaker eye through patching or atropine penalisation of the stronger eye. Earlier treatment generally produces better visual outcomes.
Seek urgent care if you notice
